King's Lynn Festival
The King's Lynn Festival grew out of a celebration of the re-opening of the Guildhall of St George, reputed to be the oldest theatre in Europe where Shakespeare once appeared. In 1951 to compliment the Festival of Britain, Lady Fermoy organised a triumphant festival. She was a close friend and lady-in-waiting to the Queen - later to became Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother - and agreed to be the festival's patron and on July 24 1951 she offically opened the newly-restored Guildhall.
